FIELDS OF MYTILUS

BY SHELLMAN SCANDINAVIA, 2026

As you enter the lobby of Nammos Resort AMAALA, a large artwork signals that you've arrived somewhere truly unique.

Fields of Mytilus is an artistic interpretation of the vast ocean beds where mussels can gather in their millions. These underwater plains stretch across the seafloor in dense, living tapestries. The mussel fields in the Nammos lobby don't reach those staggering numbers, but approximately 40,000 shells have been placed – by hand, one by one, with enduring patience – across two sweeping wall sections.

The shells have been sourced from aqua farming for the food industry; instead of ending up as waste they’ve turned into sustainable art. All shells have been carefully opened, the meat consumed, and the shells cleaned, revealing the shimmer on its graphite gray inside. The flowing clusters echo the organic patterns of a real mussel bed: not uniform, not symmetrical, but alive with movement and rhythm. As you move through the lobby the light hits the shells from different angles and the wall comes ”alive”.

Fields of Mytilus was designed and hand crafted on-site by Buster Eriksson and Mikael Hjärtsjö — two renowned Swedish shell artists working under the name Shellman Scandinavia. With the skilled assistance of a small international team, the installation was completed over two weeks in early 2026. At 35 square meters it may well be the largest shell art installation in Saudi Arabia.

”We experienced two inspiring weeks of close collaboration with our team, bringing Shellman's vision of something truly unique for Nammos Amaala to life. We are proud to have been chosen by Red Sea Global and MAJAZ Art Curators to contribute to this remarkable destination — and to have created something that hopefully will stay with every guest long after they leave.”
